The Tire Shark Takes a Bite Out Of Old and Discarded Tires

The Ultimate Solution for the Nations' Millions of Scrap Tires

EAST HARTFORD, CT - OAKLEAF Waste Management, Inc., the nation's leading provider of outsourced solid waste and recycling solutions, has created an answer for the over 300 million discarded tires in the United States annually, with the debut of The Tire SharkT-a patented, hydraulically-based tire compactor that takes scrap tires and crushes them to one-third their original size. Once crushed, four metal pins create eight punctures in the tire, rendering it unusable.

Designed to compact all passenger, light truck and SUV tires, The Tire Shark is a viable answer to the approximately 100 million discarded tires that make their way each year to landfills throughout the nation, wasting thousands of acres of valuable land and space.

"The Tire Shark is a prime example of how one product can have such far reaching and positive affects not only for businesses, but also for the environment," said Perry Moss, Vice President of Recycling Services for OAKLEAF. "It just makes sense on so many levels."

The Tire Shark also makes sound economic sense for any facility that stores discarded tires; hauling loads are increased, making disposal pick-ups less frequent. The removal of unsightly and cumbersome tires means businesses will be able to utilize their freed up space for more important retail purposes such as displaying new product or creating additional service areas. The Tire Shark has a compact, space saving design, standing only 79 inches-about the size of a soft drink vending machine, and operates on a 115/230 VAC single-phase circuit; almost any facility can house the unit. The energy efficient 2-hp motor is whisper quiet and takes a mere 12 seconds to compact a tire. The Tire Shark is simple and safe to operate for users.

Health officials have growing concerns of improper disposal of tires that can cause environmental and health hazards. Tire-based landfill fires can lead to soil, water and air contamination. Another health hazard is the indirect spread of West Nile Virus and Encephalitis. Unburied tires that collect rainwater create the perfect breeding ground for disease carrying mosquitoes. The Tire Shark eliminates this concern because once punctured, tires cannot hold water.
